'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Showrunner Explains How They Had To Rethink The Show's Timeline
There is less than a month to go before Netflix’s adaptation of the animated show Avatar: The Last Airbender premieres. It was first announced back in 2018.
That length of time is a concern for a show adapting a storyline that technically took place over the course of a year. Aging is not necessarily a concern in an animated show. When you adapt it to live-action, especially one that is supposed to be about young teenagers, that’s a different story.

Netflix showrunner, Albert Kim, talked about this unique challenge in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “There was no way we could do that,” he said, referencing the timeline of the animated show’s run. “So we had to design this first season, especially, to accommodate the possibility of some time elapsing between the first and the second season.”
For fans, they know full well that Sozin’s Comet, a comet that comes every 100 years, was used as the catalyst for Aang and his gang to get things done. Here, Kim discussed how they took that out of the equation for the time being. It’s somewhat of a necessity. Gordon Cormier, who plays the main character Aang, was 11 when he auditioned for the role…and he’s now 14. There’s been no word on season two, but assuming it goes forward, and has a production time of about three years, he’ll be 17 by the time season two airs. To accommodate this reality, Kim said he and the team considered a time jump between seasons, or at least plotted the first season to allow for that.
Still, that’s not really a concern on his mind at the moment. Kim told EW, "There's still a lot of work that has to be done, and it's a race to the finish line at this point…So right now, that's all I'm consumed with. I don't want to think about tomorrow yet."
Avatar: The Last Airbender premieres on Netflix on February 22.
