Rian Johnson Announces That 'Knives Out 3' Will Begin Filming This Year
Rian Johnson's planned Star Wars trilogy may never come to fruition, but the writer/director's other trilogy is nearing its completion. The third installment of Knives Out will reportedly go into production later this year. The yet-untitled film will see the return of Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc but like in Glass Onion, likely in a completely new murder mystery.
Like all other Hollywood productions, Knives Out 3 (which most likely won’t be the final title) was hindered by the writers/actors strike last year, but now Johnson is ready to deep dive into his next project:
"I’ve got the premise, I’ve got the setting, I’ve got what the movie is in my head. It’s just a matter of writing the damn thing."

Like its two predecessors, Johnson and his longtime collaborator Ram Bergman will produce the third installment within their T-Street Productions. Aside from Craig, no other cast members have been announced yet, but the film will likely include several big names. After the massive success of the first Knives Out with a global gross of $310 million, Netflix quickly secured the rights for two sequels in March 2021 for the impressive amount of $450 million.
Glass Onion has been in cinemas for just five days between November 23 and 27, still earning $13.28 million, before moving exclusively to the streaming giant, where it broke the record of the most streamed movie in one week. Johnson has expressed his discontent with this decision, wishing for a longer cinematic run of his movie. It remains to be seen if Netflix will apply a similar release scheme with Knives Out 3.
With the movie going into production later this year, a release in 2025 is very likely, maybe in the fall, as its two predecessors.
