Word has been floating that Disney is developing a new addition to The Princess Diaries franchise. Not only is there confirmation of a third film being in the works, but Anne Hathaway is returning as well! The actress made a brief reel on Instagram, compiling two major ‘shut up’ moments from the films before holding up three fingers and giving her own statement of, “Shut up!”  The post's caption reads, “Miracles happen ✨👑 Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues ❤️‍🔥”

Adele Lim is taking the reins as director of the film. Lim was a writer involved with Crazy Rich Asians (2018) and Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), and directed Joy Ride (2023), among many other credits.  Julie Andrews, who played Mia’s grandmother, has expressed a bit of interest in returning for a third movie, but any involvement is unconfirmed. The original two films were based on books of the same name written by Meg Cabot. The center of the plot follows Hathaway’s Mia Thermopolis, a teenager who learns that she is the heir to the throne of Genovia, a fictional European country.

The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) left off with a fair bit of change to Genovia’s governmental procedures. Mia helped to change the law that forced arranged marriages to be capable of being crowned to rule, new blood entered the parliament, a new children’s home was opened, and Mia and Nicholas’ love was expressed. There are plenty of plot avenues for the third film to pursue, though anything specific is being kept under wraps at this time. In the meantime, the first two installments are available to stream on Disney+.
