'Alf' To Make A Comeback Per Ryan Reynolds

Rebooting famous 80s TV shows can be tricky, as more often than not, the general concepts of these shows only work within the decade they were created in, especially for sitcoms. Ryan Reynolds is clever enough to know this, so he is not trying to reboot ALF, but he will bring the long-nosed, wise-cracking alien back to his own Maximum Effort Channel on July 29.

ALF (short for “Alien Life Form”) ran for 102 episodes on NBC between 1986 and 1990 and told the adventures of the titular character (whose real name is Gordon Shumway) after he crashed his spaceship into the garage of the Tanner family, consisting of Willie, his wife Kate, and their two kids, Lynn and Brian. And there was, of course, the family's cat Lucky, constantly in danger of being eaten by ALF, as cats are delicates on his homeworld Melmarc.

While ALF, who usually acted like a curious child in a toy store, was never shy to cause his hosts a lot of trouble, the Tanners did all they could to protect their guest from the curious eyes of their neighbors as well as from the U.S. government, which was much more easy back then, before the internet or smartphones.

Besides the real-life series, there were two ALF animated shows in the 80s and a rather unsuccessful movie from 1996, which did not include the Tanners. In 2002 the alien appeared in several commercials and hosted a short-lived talk show in 2004 called ALF's Hit Talk Show. Since then, rumors popped up from time to time about a new ALF series or a movie, but these plans never came to fruition.

What Deadpool star Reynolds, Maximum Effort and Shout! Studios plan for July 29 is not a new ALF series, but a so-called Caturday Marathon, consisting of reruns of old episodes mixed with ALF-centric shorts highlighting brands like Mint Mobile and Hims, as well as Maximum Effort's Podcats: The Pawdcast.

To realize these, Reynolds teamed up with Paul Fusco, the creator of the original show and also the voice of Gordon Shumway:

"At Maximum Effort, we love taking risks and blurring the lines between shows and sponsorship because we believe both can be equally entertaining," says Reynolds, adding: "Besides my irrational love of ALF growing up, one of the reasons we licensed this show was precisely because Paul, Shout! Studios, and our intrepid brand partners wanted to plot with us to bring ALF back to life."

Maximum Effort is available through Fubo, Amazon Freevee, LG Channels, Plex, Sling Freestream, Tubi, VIDAA, VIZIO Watchfree+, and Xumo Play.
