'Deadpool 3' Saved When Hugh Jackman Called Ryan Reynolds
As with any great Hollywood movie, there's always a fantastic story behind how it was made or sometimes how it almost didn’t come to be. And Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine is no exception. Even before its public release, The Hollywood Reporter shared a story that highlights the pivotal role of Hugh Jackman in bringing the Merc with the Mouth and Weapon X to life on the big screen, a role that saved Deadpool & Wolverine.
Recently, in a sit-down interview with Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds, the director revealed the arduous journey of developing a script for the third film, a journey that was a struggle for veterans like Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese, and Zeb Wells. The situation was so dire that Levy and Ryan Reynolds were on the verge of meeting with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige to discuss the possibility that this might not be the right time to bring Wade Wilson into the MCU fold.

“Ryan and I were right at the edge of saying to Kevin, ‘Maybe now is not the right moment because we’re not coming up with a story,” Levy told the magazine. However, everything changed in mid-August of 2022 when Hugh Jackman, fresh from his performance in The Music Man on Broadway, made a crucial call to Ryan Reynolds.
Jackman was wondering what his next steps were in his career during a weeklong break from the musical he came up with the idea saying, “Deadpool-Wolverine. I want to do that movie.”
After the call was made, Zoom calls were planned as Reynolds explained, “On the Zoom with Kevin, we just cut right to the fucking chase…We said, ‘Look, this call just came in. I feel like we’d be idiots to look this gift horse in the mouth and ignore it.
From struggle bus to presumptive box office success, Deadpool & Wolverine appears to be the film fans have wanted for all their lives.
Deadpool & Wolverine opens in theatres on July 26, 2024.
