It’s about to be always sunny over Abbott Elementary as the two Philadelphia-set comedies, Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, prepare to do a crossover episode.  Speculation has been in the air since last February, when Sunny’s creator and star Rob McElhenney posted on X regarding an immersive Willy Wonka experience, “A lot of you are saying this feels like an episode of Sunny, but to me, it feels more like an @alwayssunny @AbbottElemABC crossover episode”.  Quinta Brunson, creator and star of Abbott Elementary, quickly responded with, “Just say the word @robmcelhenney. I love you guys”.  By the time the summer rolled around and, with it, the San Diego Comic-Con, Brunson was ready to tease her audience some more by saying that Abbott Elementary would have a crossover episode, but she didn’t say with which show:

“I’m not gonna tell you with who, or with what, or where, or when,” she said as the crowd gasped and cheered. “But it’s really exciting, and I think it’ll change television as we know it.”

Just as school was getting out for the weekend this past Friday, Brunson and McElhenney made it official by posting on their social media platforms that they were indeed prepping for a crossover, showing pictures of the actors of each show posing on the set of Abbott Elementary, Brunson and McElhenney with Sunny co-star Charlie Day, and Danny DeVito with Abbott stars Tyler James Williams and William Stanford Davis.

Some may wonder how this seemingly unlikely pairing could come about.  But, looking a bit deeper, it does make sense:  both shows are very proud of their Philadelphia settings.  Abbott Elementary airs on Disney’s ABC network, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia airs on FX, also part of Disney Entertainment.  So, as each show shares its parent company, a crossover is more than feasible.

No date has been set for this episode.
