Get your yearly bingo cards ready because this news may fill a square. A previously-lost piece composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has been rediscovered by the Leipzig municipal libraries in Germany and has been performed. Mozart passed away over 200 years ago, and formerly unreleased pieces can still be credited to the composer. The piece is titled Ganz kleine Nachtmusik, or Serenade in C as the manuscript is titled; this is not to be confused with Eine kleine Nachtmusik, his Serenade No. 13 in G Major, which was completed in 1787 and released in 1827, well after his death.

Ulrich Leisinger, research head at the nonprofit organization Mozarteum Foundation, commented briefly on the find and subsequent performance, “We are convinced that we can now present a completely unknown, charming piece by the young Mozart.” It is estimated that this classical piece was composed in his pre- to early teens. The piece lasts for about 12 minutes and had its premiere last week outside of the Leipzig Opera.

Between private collectors hoarding their pieces, a lack of storage methods, and the general passing of time, lost works are not incredibly surprising; uncovering them, however, is lucky. Serenade in C is written as a string trio and performed above with two violins and a cello. There are seven distinct movements as marked in the score: a Marche, Allegro, Menuett, Boloneso, Adagio, another Menuett section, and a very lively Finale. Serenade in C makes for an easy and interesting listen, and the performers, in particular, have the piece nailed down from the crisp accents to fitting dynamic changes to move with the energy of the music.
