Game of Thrones showrunners Benioff and Weiss initially envisioned concluding Game of Thrones with a series of feature films, but the idea was ultimately scrapped. While some episodes, such as the final two episodes of Season Four, were specially released to theaters via Fathom Events, an original Westeros-based film project has yet to grace the silver screen.

However, HBO recently confirmed a film set in George R.R. Martin’s fantasy kingdom of Westeros is currently in early development. While HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys confirmed the project at a 2025 preview event, very few details were available as it is currently in early development, and nobody is currently attached.

"When we announce at HBO we're developing this story or that story, keep in mind it's developing," Bloys told a group of reporters. "We've got two shows at the moment, including Game of Thrones. I think the movie is the same idea." He added, "They'll develop an idea, we'll see if it's good. We'll read the scripts along with them. I think it could be fun and interesting. That's the point of development: you see, is there a story that's worthy of being in theaters and a big spectacle? I think it would be fun."

George R.R. Martin’s wildly successful A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, adapted by HBO as the television series Game of Thrones, previously ran from 2011 to 2019.  A prequel spinoff series, House of the Dragon, is currently running and is working towards its third season, expected in 2026. A second spin-off series based on Martin’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected in 2025.  Other proposed prequel spin-offs, such as a series about “The Long Night” and Jon Snow post-Game of Thrones, have been canceled, while others, such as one about Aegon’s conquest of Westeros, are still under discussion.
