Ah, the prequels. The movies are so divisive, that they can split a fandom. Even though many fans still aren’t fans, the generation that grew up with them, and now giving appreciation to the films, and it's deserved. One of these is The Phantom Menace, which was released 25 years ago. It introduces us to Anakin Skywalker, who is only a young slave on the planet Tatooine, and Jedi Master Qui Gon Jinn, who eventually helps Anakin Skywalker. With the anniversary coming up, let's take a look back at some of the most iconic moments from the movie.

5. Maul’s Ambush On Tatooine

As Qui Gon is escorting Anakin back to the ship, they are ambushed by Maul. This is the first time we see the Sith, even though he is quite covered in a black robe. We see Qui Gon’s strength, and how well he can handle himself against Maul. Maul, however, is only using one side of his lightsaber, making the fight a bit easier for Qui Gon. It’s another cool lightsaber battle, and the first time we see a member of the Dark Side reveal themselves in the prequels.

4. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan Vs Droidekas

The opening scene really of The Phantom Menace sets the tone for the prequels. We are spoiled with plenty of lightsaber duels throughout the three movies, and this is no different in the first movie. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are awaiting members of the Trade Federation to try and negotiate. Things of course don’t go their way, and they have to fight their way out of the room. They fight various droidekas and battle droids to get to safety. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan fight so well together, and this scene highlights that.

3. Padme Revealing Her Identity To The Gungans

Padme Amidala Naberrie is Queen Amidala. She likes to be in on the action, so for that to work, she uses her handmaidens to her advantage. Sabe, one of her handmaidens, will disguise herself as the Queen, so Padme can go undercover. During the battle with the Trade Federation, she reveals herself to the Gungans when asking for help. Everyone, besides Qui Gon, is shocked that she’s been with them the whole time, but not as the Queen. It’s one of Padme’s most iconic moments and highlights the type of character she is.

2. Now This Is Podracing!

Podracing is one of the activities Anakin Skywalker enjoys. He even has his own podracer he fixes up when he is not working for Watto. He was never the best at it, but he must use everything he got to win the race, once Qui Gon bets for his freedom from Watto. Anakin races his heart out and is sabotaged by Sebulba, a fierce rival. He manages to fix his podracer, and comes out on top, securing his freedom. It’s an exciting sequence, and we also get to see Jabba the Hutt.

1. Duel Of The Fates

One of the most iconic duels in all of Star Wars, with one of the coolest songs to accompany it. The Trade Federation has come to Naboo, and fights have broken out all across the planet. Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Master Qui Gon Jinn have stayed at the palace to fight the Darth Maul. This is the first time we see the iconic double-bladed red lightsaber, wielded by Darth Maul. The three of them battle it out until Obi-Wan gets separated. Here he witnesses the death of his Master, after being killed by Darth Maul. Once Obi-Wan is released, he goes after Maul, and successfully slices Maul in half, who then falls down the chute. He reunites with his master one last time before he dies. Later, he achieves the rank of Master and continues Qui Gon’s training in his Padawan, Anakin Skywalker.

Whatever your thoughts are on The Phantom Menace, hopefully, we can agree that the movie had some great moments. As someone who grew up with the prequels as a kid, it's crazy to me that it’s been 25 years already. The movie is being rereleased over Star Wars Day weekend, so it will be exciting to see it on the big screen once again.
