Star Wars: The Acolyte is set to release on June 4th of this year, as the Galaxy Far, Far Away takes us back in time. Centered around an acolyte of the dark side, the series setting is an interesting one, it takes place before the events of the Skywalker Saga, before the Empire, before the Clone Wars, and even before the Blockade of Naboo. This was a period unexplored by canon until relatively recently, though the Legends continuity had explored it a bunch. Consider this article an introduction to the High Republic era, and a brief overview of what it is and how The Acolyte fits into it.

The High Republic era is a multimedia initiative for Star Wars. Taking place centuries before the prequel trilogy, the High Republic era centers on a time when the Jedi were at their peak. This era has been explored by the Legends continuity, most famous in the Knights of the Old Republic duology, but has been unexplored by canon continuity until now. The Acolyte takes place near the end of this period, roughly one hundred years before The Phantom Menace. The Sith are still in hiding, but it appears they are now ready to make their move.

This period in time is near the end of the Jedi golden age. The Acolyte will likely shed some light on the end of the High Republic and the start of the Jedi Order’s stagnation, as seen in the prequel trilogy. Meanwhile, the High Republic project has entered Phase III — Trials of the Jedi, which is set to enter some 199 years before the prequels. This means that almost a century has passed between Phase III and The Acolyte, so don’t expect much of the project to be required reading.
