12 Things You Didn’t Know About This Youngling
The death of the younglings is one of the most important moments in the Star Wars saga as it shows Anakin Skywalker crossing a line from which he can never return. Star Wars fans dealt with the traumatic scene with their typical dark humor and one youngling became a viral Star Wars meme.
Ross Beadman is one of the most famous faces in Star Wars, but the average fan would walk right past him in the street now he is grown. His invisibility may be why he has not been subject to the vitriol that caused Jake Lloyd to give up acting. The Jedi youngling Sors Bandeam has become a legend in his own right and is now embedded in Star Wars lore, whether it’s the “Youngling slayer 9000” meme, or the feature in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga that allows you to jump further by repeatedly punching them mid-air, jump further). Not bad for a character that only has one line. Most fans know very little about him, so here are twelve interesting facts about the Jedi initiate.

12. His Name
The youngling that trustingly approached Anakin Skywalker during Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of The Sith is called Sors Bandeam. He was played by Ross Beadman. George Lucas created an anagram of Beadman’s name for the character since he is not listed in the main credits.
11. The “Boo”
Beadman appeared to react to Anakin Skywalker igniting his lightsaber. However, that was not how it went down on set. Hayden Christensen shouted “Boo,” surprising the young boy and making him take a step back at the right moment. This was the take that was eventually used.
10. Multiple Takes
The scene took four takes because Beadman kept making strange faces in the wrong places. He was unaware of its significance and the child actor was certain it was going to end up on the cutting room floor because of the errors he made during filming.
9. The Pay
The Jedi initiate was only paid £90 ($108) for his work on Star Wars: Episode III – The Revenge of The Sith. Beadman is not bitter about the paltry sum as it bought him “a lot of Haribo.”
8. Still Alive?
Beadman was told by his parents that he survived the Jedi Purge, and it was not until the film’s premiere that he realized his character had died. Due to his age, he said it took time to accept that he did not make it out of the temple. In his own “headcanon,” Sors escaped through an air vent and was raised by a grey Jedi on another world. Ahsoka, perhaps?
7. Anakin’s Justification
In the novelization of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of The Sith, Anakin justifies killing Sors and the rest of the younglings as freeing them from slavery to the Jedi Order. Bearing in mind Anakin’s history, it is easy to see how he might view death as preferential to life as a slave.
6. Does Luke Skywalker Know About The Temple Raid?
In Star Wars (2020) #5, set after Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, Luke finds out from Force user Verla that Darth Vader killed younglings as part of Order 66. He still went on to seek Vader out in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of The Jedi, insisting there was still good in him. Quite a contrast to the Luke we see in the sequel trilogy.
5. A Smoking Set
On set, Beadman met a number of actors, including Ewan McGregor, and Hayden Christensen. He also spotted Orli Shoshan smoking in her Shaak Ti costume.
4. Hands Up!
Beadman was originally not cast in a speaking role. He only got to say the iconic line, “Master Skywalker, there are too many of them,” because he put his hand up first to volunteer.
3. What Is Beadman Doing Now?
To date, this is Ross Beadman’s only major cinematic role. He now works as a graphic designer in the UK.
2. Ross Still Loves Star Wars
Unlike many child actors, Ross Beadman still has a positive attitude to his time in the film industry and said in a Reddit AMA that “having this role in Star Wars has positively impacted my life in multiple areas.”
1. It Could Have Been Worse
The younglings scene was described by Ian McDiarmid as being a lot more gruesome when it was filmed. Perhaps it went too far for the 12A rating (PG-13 in the United States), as most of it went on the cutting room floor after it was shown to George Lucas. Ross Beadman claims he has seen the full version on the dark web. However, if you look for it on Google, you’ll only find the host of parody endings to the scene that this rumor has spawned.
Fans would undoubtedly love it if Disney could find it in their hearts to give Ross Beadman a cameo in another series. After all, he would not be the first actor to play two parts in the saga (Andy Serkis, Kenny Baker, Silas Carson, Warwick Davis, etc). So, Kathleen Kennedy, if you are reading this, give him a call.
