Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is the second film in the Knives Out franchise, but it is not a sequel. The only character returning from the 2019 film is Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig). Glass Onion has taken Netflix by storm and is now the third most-watched movie on the platform!

The movie starts by introducing us to each character and showing us how they each received an invitation to their friend Miles’ Greek island for a murder mystery weekend. As each friend arrives in Greece, it becomes clear that none of them knows Detective Benoit Blanc, and they are shaken to see that another character, Andi, will be joining them. When everyone arrives at the island they are greeted by Miles who is shocked to see Andi and Blanc with the group. We quickly learn that Miles did not invite Blanc, but that he is happy to have him present for the weekend. Blanc tries to convince Miles to cancel, but he refuses. While everyone is relaxing, we learn that each of the friends had their careers saved by Miles, so they now do whatever he asks.

RELATED:

At dinner, it is explained that the mystery will take all weekend for the friends to decipher as there are clues spread across the island and only some of them will be helpful. In typical Blanc fashion, he solves the mystery in less than a minute in an attempt to end the weekend early. The group decides that they want to leave the next morning, but Miles begs them to stay. Right when things seem like they are going to turn around, Duke begins choking and falls to the ground dead. The friends begin to panic and then the lights go out. After Blanc watches Andi get shot through a window, he ushers everyone back inside and begins to explain what actually happened.

It turns out that Andi is dead and the person at the party is her twin sister, Helen, who had gone to Blanc a few days before the party. She explained that while she was cleaning out her sister’s home the invitation from Miles was delivered. She discovered that the day before her sister died she had sent an email to Miles and their friends saying that she had found the one thing that could destroy the “empire”. Blanc agrees to help Helen figure out what happened to her sister if she agrees to attend the party in disguise since the news of her death has not been made public. The two work together on the island to look for clues, and they discover that Andi had refused to let Miles bet their company on a new kind of solid hydrogen fuel (Klear) that she feared was too dangerous. Miles then used lawyers to write her out of the company, but Andi sued him claiming that she had intellectual ownership because she had drawn out the plan for the company on a napkin years earlier. Unfortunately, the napkin has disappeared, and her friends lied under oath that they saw Miles draw on a napkin. Helen also discovers that the thing her sister had found was the original napkin. We also learn that Helen is not dead as the bullet had lodged her notebook, and the “blood” we saw on her was actually hot sauce. The final twist is that Miles killed Andi and then had to kill Duke because he saw him leaving Andi’s home the day she died. It wasn’t poison that was used, but pineapple juice which Duke was deathly allergic to. Miles admits that he did it all, but burns the original napkin thus leaving them with no physical evidence.

The ending of the film is a hysterical masterpiece and easily the best part of the film. Helen chugs a vodka and soda after Blanc tells her that there is nothing more he can do. She then begins to break every glass sculpture in Miles’ mansion which leads to the group of friends cheering her on and eventually joining in. Miles laughs it off and even breaks a few glasses. Helen then sets the room on fire and then throws a chuck of Klear that started the entire mess in the first place. The mansion explodes and destroys everything, including Miles’ prized car and the real Mona Lisa. The final nail in the coffin is when Helen explains that since he was running his house on Klear and it has now exploded he is done. He cannot convince any investors that the product is safe to use.

The cast for this film is one of the best things about it! Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, and Dave Bautista make for a truly hilarious film that fits perfectly with the brighter summer setting. The movie was a blast from start to finish and perfectly sets up a third movie in the series.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is currently available to stream on Netflix.
