Is That Actually K-2SO In 'Star Wars: Andor'?

Is that actually K-2SO? One thing that fans have been asking about since Andor’s announcement is the role of Cassian’s sarcastic droid counterpart, K-2SO. Voiced and motion captured by Alan Tudyk in Rogue One, the droid became an instant fan-favorite thanks to his dry wit, sarcastic demeanor, and surprising humanity beneath his metallic exterior. Months after the series’ initial announcement, Tony Gilroy revealed that K2 would not be appearing in Andor’s first season due to the focus on Cassian’s character. However, the seventh episode, “Announcement,” might have just given us our first glimpse at the iconic droid.

Near the end of the episode, Cassian uses the credits he got from the heist on Aldhani to take a break and have his own vacation on the tropical world of Niamos. While there, he uses the name Keef and rents a fancy room to stay in. However, things quickly go wrong for him when he ends up on the beach during an attempted heist by an unknown party. While trying to distance himself from the crime scene, Cassian is stopped by a shoretrooper. Due to his appearance, he is profiled and lumped with the crime despite having zero involvement. As Cassian attempts to talk himself out of being arrested, the shore trooper calls over a KX security droid to “hang around” Cassian while he goes after one of the suspects. Taking the trooper’s command literally, the droid proceeds to “hang” Cassian by holding him up against a wall by his throat. Cassian is eventually released and sentenced to six years in prison due to being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Naturally, fans have been speculating if this particular droid could actually be the droid that Cassian eventually reprograms to become K-2SO.

Now the biggest factor going against this possibility is the fact that the canonical first meeting between Cassian and K-2SO was depicted in Duane Swierczynski’s one-shot comic that was released back in August of 2017. However, as many fans have pointed out, Star Wars isn’t unwilling to change certain details from canon comics in the service of the stories being told. Plus the comic’s lackluster reception may contribute to Lucasfilm’s willingness to do their own take on how these characters initially met. In addition, Tony Gilroy’s specific wording may be a clue as to when we’ll first see K-2SO. Though Gilroy said K-2SO wouldn't appear in the first season, this doesn’t mean the KX droid that becomes K-2SO couldn’t still appear. If this is indeed the case, then it’s possible that Cassian might utilize this very KX droid to aid in his escape from Imperial prison. Then, in the next season, he could reprogram the droid and give him the personality K2 is known for.

Andor, the official prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been fleshing out the backstory for Cassian Andor in more intricate detail than arguably any previous streaming series in the franchise. With a unique focus on the inner workings of the Galactic Empire and the early Rebel Alliance, Andor has done an excellent job of setting the stage for the status quo of the galaxy by the time of A New Hope. This isn’t to say the series hasn’t been focusing on the titular rebel himself. Cassian’s early history has been given a much-needed overhaul, with his early life being based heavily on the happenings of our world, such as immigration, gentrification, and racial profiling.

There are many ways this series could go about introducing K-2SO and developing his personality and rapport with Cassian. But whichever way they end up going, the likelihood of K-2SO appearing in Andor is high. Very high.
