Move Over Ah-Mario!
With Mario’s first cinematic outing in almost 30 years on the horizon, there has been mountains of speculation about the film. How will an open-world game translate into a linear narrative? What will the storyline actually be? What the hell is Chris Pratt’s accent? All valid questions.
While there have been some big names cast, the trailer doesn’t give a lot away. We know that Mario, Bowser, Toad, and Kamek will have roles to play, but what other characters from Nintendo’s rich history could potentially be in the film? Perhaps as full-on secondary characters, fun cameos, or even just Easter Eggs for fans of the series. Let’s a-go! Shall we?
RELATED:
Daisy
We know Anya Taylor-Joy will be lending her vocal talents as Princess Peach in the upcoming feature. But what about her royal counterpart from Sarasaland – Princess Daisy? Daisy is a mainstay of the majority of the Mario games and featured in the original Super Mario Bros movie. It might be a case of too many Princesses spoiling the royal broth, but it’s not totally out of the realm of possibility.
Rosalina
Rosalina has become a fan favourite in recent years after first appearing in Super Mario Galaxy. It might be one giant leap too far to introduce a whole galaxy in the first movie, but judging from how good the quality of the animation looks (I want to touch the mushrooms)– this could be a beautiful addition to the roster!
Mayor Pauline
The OG Success story in the Mario Universe. Pauline started as an 8-bit damsel in distress in a, legally distinct, King Kong escapade, but now is the Mayor of New Donk City. She could be a great no-nonsense character to bring in, perhaps even from whatever “real world” Mario is from.
As long as she gets a musical number though, as Jump Up Superstar slaps. There will be no further questions.
Diddy Kong
God, I hope not.
Yoshi
Come on. Mario’s faithful steed, and sidekick, for all these years. Surely our green dinosaur stalwart can make an appearance, mleming his way in and out of trouble. Just watch out for any pits if Mario needs to get across.
Bowser Jr
Please see the Diddy Kong entry.
King Boo
In a little post-trailer stinger, we see Charlie Day’s Luigi being chased through a spooky environment by Dry Bones…s.
It’s not too hard to imagine that the Boos or their resurrected ruler could make an appearance here.
Lakitu
Enemy, to friend, to the production crew. Lakitu will likely not have a huge role to play in the film, but we will likely get a small cameo of our cloud-careening cameraman. 50/50 it’s a fourth wall break.
Waluigi
An affront to humanity and decency.
Waluigi should not only not exist but should be stricken from the annals of history.
Although if you cast Jeff Goldblum in the role…. let’s talk.
Wario
You knew it was coming. I knew it was coming. Chain Chomp knew it was coming.
The ultimate anti-hero and anti-hygienist. Wario.
Cast Danny DeVito in it. I don’t even mean in CG. Cast Danny DeVito, don’t even give him a script and start clearing space for the awards.
