In a strange collision of reality and fiction, the man behind Luke Skywalker has made it his first order of business to aid a resistance movement in this galaxy. Mark Hamill, the actor that played Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, has accepted the mission to supply the Ukrainian resistance with drones in their effort to defeat the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The move comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky requested assistance in response to the Russian's use of drones designed for single use and severe destruction. These "Kamikaze" drones have inspired the creation of Ukraine's "Army of Drones" to aid in the fight and push back against the Russian invasion.
Mark Hamill has heroically accepted the responsibility of fundraising ambassador with United 24 after a Zoom call with the Ukrainian President. The legendary actor's efforts are in conjunction with many celebrities raising funds for Ukrainian medical relief, and he continues to promote the resistance using his social media prowess. In an interview with Bloomberg Radio's Sound On, Mark Hamill offered the following as context, "Very simply: Ukraine needs drones. They define war outcomes, they protect their land, their people, they monitor the border, they're eyes in the sky…." Hamill elaborated that the Ukrainian war effort has over 500 drones in its fight against the Russian occupation.
The Ukrainian-Russian conflict began in late 2021 with a series of unusual Russian military troop placements and alleged military exercises near the border of Ukraine. It escalated when Russian Head of State Vladimir Putin began encouraging Pro-Russian segments of Ukraine to secede and support the nationalistic efforts of Russia. Putin claimed the need to do so was over the removal of reminders of the Communist Leader Vladimir Lenin, calling all who removed statues of the genocidal leader "ungrateful descendants." Putin initiated a full-scale invasion in February of 2022 and has led a war effort marked with war crimes and human rights violations. The fact that interference from western governments has been met with vague threats of nuclear retaliation has spurred private individuals and corporations to provide relief to innocent Ukrainian civilians (usually women and children) who are usually the targets of the Russian military.
