Has Din Djarin Broken The Mandalorian Code?
With The Mandalorian Season 3 premiere a little more than a week away, fans have been looking back at pivotal moments in the first two seasons. One of the biggest things that will be discussed in Season 3 is what Din Djarin will have to do to become a true Mandalorian again. For many fans though, we question whether or not Djarin really needs to do anything. Has he really broken the Mandalorian code, and if so, is it possible that he has broken it more than once?
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE MANDALORIAN SEASONS 1 AND 2 AND THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT
In Season 1 of The Mandalorian, we learn that Din Djarin cannot take off his helmet unless he is alone. If he does remove his helmet in front of others or if someone else removes his helmet then he is no longer a Mandalorian, and he can never put the helmet back on. One of the most jaw-dropping moments in Season 1 is in the finale when Djarin is willing to die rather than remove his helmet to allow IG-11 to heal him. The droid quickly reminds Djarin that he is not a living being, so it technically isn’t breaking the code for him to see his face. This leads to our first glimpse of Djarin’s face in the series. While it is a sad implication that droids are not looked at as actual beings, it did allow Djarin to survive.

In Season 2, more questions were raised about the specifics of the Mandalorian Code and Din Djarin’s clan as a whole. In Season 2, Episode 3, Djarin meets a group of Mandalorians led by Bo-Katan Kryze who do not wear their all the time. When Djarin accuses them of not being Mandalorians, a discussion about the “old ways” begins and seems to follow Djarin through the rest of the season. In Episode 7, when Djarin changes into a stormtrooper outfit and ditches his Mandalorian armor and helmet, Mayfeld poses an interesting question: “Is it that you can’t take off your Mando helmet or you can’t show your face?” This is something that had not been discussed previously since most fans assumed they were one and the same. If you take off your helmet then you also show your face. The episode also saw Djarin remove his stormtrooper helmet, and while Mayfeld promised he would pretend he hadn’t seen his face and the rest of the people were killed, it did not change that his face was seen.
In the Season 2 finale, Djarin removes his helmet once again, this time in front of multiple people. We knew it would lead to new problems going into Season 3. This was confirmed in episode 5 of The Book of Boba Fett when Djarin admits to the Armorer that he showed his face to Grogu, but he never mentions Mayfeld or the stormtrooper helmet. He is exiled from his clan and told that he is no longer a Mandalorian until he returns to Mandalore and redeems himself.
There are so many questions that arise when watching Din Djarin’s actions with his helmet throughout Seasons 1 and 2. Mayfeld’s question and Djarin’s silence also lead us to wonder if it’s the helmet itself that can’t be removed or if it is in fact the showing of the face that is the true transgression. The code has been referenced in both The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Rebels, yet there is no concrete proof of what the code actually says. Hopefully, Season 3 of The Mandalorian will finally give us a better idea of what the code actually says. It seems as though Djarin only broke the version of the code that his people follow. Bo-Katan, Boba Fett, and Sabine Wren all consider themselves Mandalorians, and yet none of them have any problems with removing their helmet and showing their faces to others.
Seasons 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian are now streaming on Disney+, and Season 3 is set to release on Wednesday, March 1.
