Darth Vader Sees The Future In ‘Star Wars: Revelations’
The future is wild. Last week saw the release of Star Wars: Revelations, a one-shot comic issue made to tease the future of Marvel Star Wars comics in 2023 and beyond. Written by Marc Guggenheim and drawn by various artists, the issue gives readers glimpses of future stories through a unique framing device. During the events of Hidden Empire #1, Darth Vader is called to a cave on Mustafar by the Eye of Webbish Bog, a cosmic deity who sees multiple versions of the past, present, and future.
Using the Force, the Eye shows Vader bits of events yet to occur. Among them are Vader being confronted by the rest of Padmé Amidala’s surviving handmaidens, Luke Skywalker fighting off an ancient droid named Ajax Sigma, Doctor Chelli Aphra trying to retake control of her body from the Spark Eternal, and Beilert Valance abandoning the Empire while being hunted by Inferno Squad. In addition, Vader learns that the Fermata Cage, Crimson Dawn’s ultimate weapon against the Emperor, was designed by none other than Darth Momin, whose spirit helped Vader design his own fortress.

Once Vader sees the visions, he senses more in the cave with him and realizes that this is also a test. Using his lightsaber, the Force, and the surrounding lava pools, Vader kills a couple of local Mustafarian hunters and demands answers from the Eye. The Eye explains that the visions he saw were warnings of the end of everything. When Vader asks why he should care, the Eye points out that Vader is a part of everything. However, if he could not see that, he could not be helped.
Annoyed, Vader returns to his fortress, where he is contacted by Darth Sidious, who informs him about Qi’ra’s attempt on his life and her possession of the Fermata Cage. Vader is tasked by his master with finding and destroying the Cage, along with anyone who knows of its existence, a scene we previously saw in the first issue of Hidden Empire.
Revelations is a solid one-shot that gives the fans a taste of where each current Star Wars comic series is leading. I also enjoyed the framing device of the Eye warning Vader of the future and trying to convince him to care about the possible end of the entire galaxy. This is yet another push for Vader to return to the light, if not for the galaxy’s sake, then for his. Though the one aspect that I enjoyed the most was the possibility of multiple futures, many of which are presented in a brilliant double-page spread, on which we see Luke holding different kyber crystals, Vader charging alongside the handmaidens, Aphra kissing Domina Tagge, Qi’ra standing over the defeated Emperor, and Sabé donning Darth Vader’s helmet.
While one could argue that Revelations is essentially a giant advertisement, the issue still teases the future of Star Wars comics in a fun and attractive way while giving Vader one more reason to finally get his act together. Whatever Vader has to do, he had better have the strength to do it.
