Welcome back to the world of Willow

We’re full speed ahead into the quest to retrieve Airk in episode 3, ‘The Battle of the Slaughtered Lamb.’

Kit is still your typical angsty teen, showing impatience and annoyance with several members of the group, specifically Boorman. Boorman tries to tell Kit the story of the Kymerian Cuirass, a breastplate that, when activated by a key called the Lux Arcana, all but guarantees a victory in battle. He begins to tell Kit that he and her father, Madmartigan, are looking for the key, but Kit interrupts him, telling him to only tell her the parts about her father. Boorman makes a quip that “your generation has, like, zero attention span for epic tales.”

RELATED:

After being revealed to be Elora Danan by Willow, then kidnapped by Commander Ballantine at the end of the second episode (and is under the power of the Crone), Elora manages to free herself and runs off. However, the group is slow to realize that Elora was taken, but once they do, they head off with Jade putting her tracking skills to good use.

Elora comes across two women living alone in the woods, Hubert and Anne, who, after learning it’s actually Elora, pledge their lives to help Elora become the True Emperess and support her as she leads her army against the forces of darkness. Naturally, Ballantine catches up to Elora, and Hubert and Anne’s loyalty is immediately put to the ultimate test.

Throughout the episode, Willow has visions of locations or what will happen to a particular member. He uses the visions to guide the group to their next destination.

Willow finally gets to use that large walking staff of his by slamming it into the ground (a la Gandalf) during the last battle in the rain, causing a blast of magic that kills the Crone’s curse that has affected Ballantine and the other knights, and unfortunately, a few members of the fellowship. Finally, the group realizes they must go into Nockmaar to continue their journey and save Graydon, who was injured in the battle.

As the final scene wraps up, we’re treated to a new electro-rock version of Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’ by Rina Sawayama. One thing Willow has gotten right so far is the end credits, cleverly choosing songs that either fit the episode or foreshadow the next.

One of the issues with the battle scenes is that while they are shot and reasonably well–choreographed, they are doomed from the start as they are drenched in either fog or darkness. Unfortunately, the rain battle in this episode is so dark that even adjusting the settings on the TV doesn’t help.

Willow comes off as a grumpy jerk, with many of his deliveries coming across as deadpan and not in a clear sarcastic way. Minus his big moment when he uses his staff, Willow seems to not have a place. Graydon ends up the same way, except instead of terrible delivery, his character is solely there to either chicken out or screw up whichever task he’s been given. Hopefully, they’ll both be used to their full potential in the upcoming episodes.

Still waiting on Christian Slater to arrive…
