'Secret Invasion' Episode 1 Review
Marvel Studios' newest Disney+ show asks the question, “Who can you trust?”. Secret Invasion sees the return of Nick Fury and other familiar characters and the unfortunate fate of one of them. The first episode was released, and it seems to have a different feel from some of the Marvel content we have seen lately. The first episode ended with a bang, and it will be exciting to see where the mini-series goes from here.
The MCU has been exploring the multiverse lately. These new heroes will need all the help they can get, especially with the threat of Kang looming. Secret Invasion, however, takes a step back from the exploration of the multiverse. This show feels more like it belongs in one of the earlier MCU phases when things were relatively a bit simpler. The threat of Skrull invasion is looming, especially as a certain group of them will stop at nothing to get a new homeworld.
RELATED:
This is the first time we have seen Nick Fury since Avengers: Endgame. He has been up in space, working on SABER, an intergalactic space defense organization. He is a bit worse for wear and has a noticeable limp. However, his signature eyepatch is gone, and we get to see the extent of what Goose did to him during the events of Captain Marvel. Fury is also clearly struggling with the events of the blip, and even the other characters have said that he hasn’t been the same since then. He is called back to Earth by Talos, who is worried about his daughter and a threat to Earth. The Skrulls have invaded and are here to try and take Earth for their new homeworld. He also wants to make sure that Nick Fury kept his promise all those years ago about finding the Skrulls a new homeworld. After not seeing Nick Fury for all of Phase 4, this is a wonderful way to welcome him back into the MCU.
While it’s good to see Nick Fury again, we also get to see Ben Mendelsohn in the role of Talos. Emilia Clarke also joins the MCU as G’iah, Talos’s daughter. Emilia Clarke is a great addition to the MCU, and from what we saw of her character in the first episode, I am interested to see where she ends up by the end of the series. There were also appearances by Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill and Martin Freeman as Agent Ross.
The first episode of Secret Invasion makes me excited for the rest of the mini-series. The return of Nick Fury is wonderful, and I am excited to see more of him and SABER in the future of the MCU. One thing about the series, however, is the use of AI art in the opening credits. The past credits for MCU shows have been beautifully done by artists. Unfortunately, they went a different route with the one for Secret Invasion, which is a shame. All in all, the first episode of Secret Invasion was exciting, and this show is the perfect way to start Phase 5.
New episodes of Secret Invasion release every Wednesday on Disney+.
