‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Episode 5 Spoiler-Free Review
Contains spoilers for episodes 1- 4!
The newest episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution has been released, and we have a lot to unpack! This week’s episode was full of unexpected twists and an ending that I’m still not over. In my opinion, this was the best episode of the season so far. This was also the midseason finale, so new episodes won’t be returning until January 12!
Following episode four’s example, this week’s episode felt more like a classic Criminal Minds episode. The focus was on one case, the politics that surrounded the victims, and the suspected killer making the team’s job harder than ever. In episodes one, two, and three, we got accustomed to the new format which focused solely on the serial killer network and how evil Sicarius is. While this was interesting, it was nice to have a change of pace with episode 4 which followed the old Criminal Minds episode format. While the newer format guaranteed action every episode, it was unrealistic in the idea that the BAU would only be following one group of killers and have no other cases coming across their desks.
RELATED:
We got to explore more of Garcia and Tyler Green’s relationship that was first introduced last week. While we originally believed Tyler to be part of the network we quickly learned that he was actually working to infiltrate it to find Sicarius who he knew would lead him to his sister’s killer. During this week’s episode, we learned exactly why he reached out to Garcia, and she is forced to come to terms with these facts and decide if she is still willing to help.
We finally learned this week what Will’s diagnosis is, and while it seems like good news, I don’t fully trust him and the information he is giving to JJ. I wasn’t a fan of her husband when he was introduced in the original series, and I am even less of a fan of him now. We also got another mention of Spencer Reid in tonight’s episode, so I am holding out hope that he might return either at the end of this season or possibly in the next season if we get one (fingers crossed).
One of the best aspects of the episode was that the Deputy Director finally got a reality check. Not only did he have a personal connection to the case that the BAU was investigating, but while continuing to play the political game, he made a choice that left him with blood on his hands. I don’t typically wish for anything negative to happen to characters in shows, but this guy has been wearing on my nerves all season!
Lastly, we learned a ton of information about the network during the episode. We discover more about how Sicarius chooses his network’s members, how he stays in contact with them, and the identity of his benefactor who was first introduced during episode 3. Unfortunately, the episode ended with a gut-wrenching cliffhanger that for new fans might not seem like much, but to fans of the original show, we know that no one is ever safe on Criminal Minds.
All-new episodes of Criminal Minds: Evolution are available to stream Thursdays on Paramount+.
