A seasoned actor has been cast in the upcoming Pixar film Elio. Zoe Saldana, well known for her roles in various blockbusters like the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and the Avatar film series, has joined the animated film as Elio’s aunt.

At D23 this month, Saldana stated: “I felt a real connection to the character and wanted to see a representation of how a real family works on screen. The relationship you and I share in the movie felt authentic.”

Elio is the 29th film from Pixar, and its plot is stated to revolve around a boy named Elio (voiced by Jonas Kibreab) who is accidentally transported to an interplanetary organization called the Communiverse. Filled with representatives of various planets across the galaxies, Elio is mistaken for the ambassador of Earth and is drawn into a pressure-filled environment of aliens and personal trials. Two of these aliens will be Ambassadors Questa and Grigon, voiced by Jameela Jamil and Brad Garrett respectively. Elio’s mother, Olga, will be voiced by America Ferrera.

Unveiled at the 2022 D23 Expo, Elio was originally set for a 2024 release date and was pushed back a year. The film will now be released in June of 2025. Pixar will be hoping that Elio reaches some of the astronomical success of the recently released Inside Out 2, which recently cleared 1.5 billion dollars worldwide, and currently sits as one of 2024’s highest-grossing films.
