Support for the Writers’ Guild of America stretches across the pond as the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain chimes in on the contract negotiations and upcoming strike.  WGGB chair Lisa Holdsworth gave a statement to Variety regarding their stance, pointing out that “many of their issues are our issues.”  Holdsworth summed up their overall stance:

“Their fight is our fight. We hope that the WGA reaches a deal but we are ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with our sister union and their members in support of every writer’s right to be paid a decent rate for their work, to be treated with respect and to be financially rewarded for the success of their work – including subsequent use and sales.”

The WGA recently held a vote to gauge if their members would be willing to strike should their current contract expire without reaching an agreement.  Over 97% of members from the West and East branches voted yes, giving the union the power to call a strike if necessary.  Should a strike occur, the WGGB Executive Council will advise against working in the WGA jurisdiction in support of their cause.

Negotiations between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have been ongoing since March 20th.  The writers are fighting for better compensation, increased residuals, and improved protection among other things.  You can read more about the whole situation here.
