The Rings of Power has begun diving into the mysterious background of the people who will one day be known as the Hobbits. Season 2’s fourth episode sees the Harfoot characters of Poppy and Nori encounter a group called the Stoors, surprising both parties but leading to a series of connections.

For those unaware, the Stoors are one of the three groups who eventually make up the Hobbits in Tolkien’s world. They significantly differ from the Harfoots and the Fallohides as they are taller, can grow beards, and are heavily associated with water as they tend to fish from rivers. They are also said to be more friendly with humans than other future Hobbits.

RELATED:

The Rings of Power presents new lore to explain how the Stoors became divided from the other stout peoples as, for those who know Tolkien’s world, information about the origin of the Hobbits has been scarce. The Stoors of the show tell a story about a member of their people called Rorimas Burrows who had a dream of a distant land full of greenery and rivers (The Shire). He led an exodus of followers away from his fellow Stoors, but as his group traveled, he did not turn back nor did he wait for those who fell behind. He never found the land he sought and instead created the Harfoots, migrants still moving about to this day and made up of those lost travelers.

It will be interesting to see how this reunion of halfling-kind will impact the coming story of Season 2 and beyond. It also suggests we may meet the Fallohides in the future, and their introduction will help us understand even more about this developing narrative regarding the creation of the Hobbits. We will just have to wait and see what The Rings of Power has in store.
