'Westworld' Has Been Canceled By HBO After 4 Seasons

Westworld has been canceled after four seasons. HBO comments on its decision in The Hollywood Reporter:

“Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step. We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. It's been a thrill to join them on this journey.”

Co-creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have previously expressed interest in wrapping up the story in the fifth season. However, now that there will be no fifth season, the future of Westworld remains in doubt. Fortunately, the core cast will still be paid for season five despite the cancellation, due to pay-or-play options exercised at some point last year. This is not an unusual move, as networks sometimes pay before a renewal decision is made. It is especially done in cases like this when the cast features big names who would be hard to bring back together if they were released from their contractual obligations.
