'Tron: Ares' Director Talks About The Movie's Soundtrack
Tron: Ares has recruited the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails to compose its soundtrack. Best known for hits like Head Like a Hole, The Perfect Drug, and Wish, the band has thirteen Grammys attached to their name and are inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Director Joachim Rønning has spoken about the music, describing it as “With Nine Inch Nails making the music, this instalment will be a little grittier, a little bit more industrial.” The filmmaker followed up with praise for the band. “It’s been important for me to contrast The Grid and the real world. In that sense, Nine Inch Nails lends itself perfectly into this new Tron world that we are creating." This might be a hint that we are getting a grittier Grid this time around.
It’s expected that core NIN members Ross and Reznor will do the lion's share of the composition, but no doubt we’ll hear from Robin Finck, Alessandro Cortini, and Ilan Rubin on the tracks.

Atticus Ross is responsible for the backing vocals, synth, and keyboard in NIN, but despite being a hardcore rocker, he has a large number of hit scores under his belt. He recently composed for the hit TV series Shogun, although he received the most acclaim for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Nine Inch Nails vocalist Trent Reznor, composed the soundtrack for Quake and Call of Duty: Black Ops II and partnered with buddy Ross on The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
It’s no surprise that Tron: Ares has embraced mosh pits and eyeliner, considering Thirty Second’s to Mars’ Jared Leto has signed up as producer, but the movie has big shoes to fill. Daft Punk partnered with an 85-piece orchestra for its predecessor, Tron: Legacy. On its release, Tron: Legacy topped the US Soundtrack charts, as well as the US and UK dance album charts. Let’s see what Nine Inch Nails can do when Tron: Ares hits theatres in October 2025.
