Toonami Rewind On Adult Swim Is Part Of A Much Bigger Plan For The Network

Toonami’s return to weekdays with Toonami Rewind has been a hit amongst Toonami Faithful. However, it is part of a much larger plan for the network and the Toonami brand in general. Jason DeMarco, one of the co-creators of Toonami and the current head of the block, said that it was the network’s idea to create the Toonami Rewind block after the success of the regular Toonami block on Saturdays.

Last year, Adult Swim expanded to 5pm and premiered the block Checkered Past, which showcases classic Cartoon Network shows from the 90s and 2000s such as Dexter’s Lab, Ed, Ed n Eddy, and Courage the Cowardly Dog. This block originally ran on weekdays from 5-7 pm, but with Toonami Rewind taking the Friday spot, it now runs Monday through Thursday. If the block is successful, we may see more shows coming to it. Currently, the Toonami rewind block consists of Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z Kai (which also airs on the regular Toonami block), and Naruto. DeMarco says that they have plans for this expansion of the block if it does well. Though they definitely want to bring several shows back, DeMarco says that they’re starting slow and focusing on shows that are cheap and easy to acquire. He also stated that he’d be open to airing legacy shows from the Adult Swim Toonami block’s predecessor, Adult Swim Action, on Toonami. The regular Toonami block (currently in its 12th year of revival), still airs alongside this new block on Saturdays from 12m-3:30 am.
