The Oscars May Actually Add A Category For Stunts
One of the biggest draws to a movie pertains to the stunt work. While there are iconic dialog scenes, how many sizzle reels or retrospectives feature clips from the iconic action sequences of movies? It’s integral to the machinery that comes together to make a movie.
The recent film The Fall Guy put the effort of industry stunt workers into focus. Some even claimed it was made just to pressure the Academy to create a stunt category. Ryan Gosling and the stunt team for The Fall Guy headed by Ben Jenkin, repeatedly performed stunts at promotions for the movie, which focuses on a retired stuntman who gets caught up in a plot deeper than just the disappearance of a movie star.

Those efforts seem to be paying off. Empire sat down with the heads of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, where they revealed that they are exploring the possibility of including a stunt work category in a future Oscars.
Academy President, Janet Yang, told Empire the Academy, “…is like a living, breathing organism,” explains Academy President Janet Yang. “We listen to our members, and if there’s really strong support and there’s whole mechanisms for how to advance the cause, and they’re interested… That’s what happened with Casting. We’ve created new branches over the decades. So it does evolve, and it evolves with the changing industry.”
The reference to Casting concerns a new category they have included that will appear in two years at the Oscars for Casting Directors, trying to highlight her statements that the Academy listens to its members and changes with the times. However, it remains one of the most exclusive groups in the world, whose interior mechanisms of change and decision-making are not widely known to the lay public, and is frequently the focus of ire and criticism as a result.
Given this new revelation, it is worth keeping an eye on the industry to see if anything comes of this momentum.
