A character from The Lord of the Rings, a man who rhymes and sings, will make his grand live-action debut, in The Rings of Power season two. Having been confirmed that Tom Bombadil will appear in the series last month, showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay have been revealing how they brought this legendary character into live-action.

In a new interview with Total Film, Payne stated that “it was the opportunity, not of one lifetime, but many lifetimes, to write Tom Bombadil.” Bombadil’s unique way of speaking has been researched, using the Anglo-Saxon verse Tolkien had when originally writing the character. It has also been said that a quarter of Bombadil’s dialogue comes directly from the books.

Those books feed into how Bombadil will be portrayed in The Rings of Power, with that history surrounding him. As Payne reveals, “One of the moments I love best about this season is when The Stranger asks, ‘Who are you?’ and Bombadil just says, ‘Eldest.’ He’s wacky and sings songs, but when he says that, you get this sense of, ‘oh, he’s been around for thousands of years.’”

Portrayed by Rory Kinnear, Tom Bombadil will appear in The Rings of Power season two, which will begin airing on Amazon Prime Video on August 29.
