The Toxic Avenger reboot starring Peter Dinklage has been labeled “unreleasable.” World of Reel reportedly spoke with an unnamed producer who said the film was “unreleasable” as the marketability outlook is “too out there,” suggesting why no distributor is associated with the movie yet. The same unnamed producer insinuated that if the film went anywhere, it would most likely be picked up by VOD or streaming. “If it had great reviews then maybe the forecast would be a little rosier, but there isn’t much potential. It’s too niche. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see it on Tubi a few years from now.” Filmmaker and producer Adam Masnyk confirmed via social media post that the information provided by the unnamed producer is factual.

Macon Blair directed the project and boasts a credible cast, including Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones, X-Men: Days of Future Past), Kevin Bacon (Footloose, Hollow Man), Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings trilogy, Sin City), and Jacob Tremblay (Wonder, Luca).

According to CBM, The Toxic Avenger has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It has been viewed at multiple film festivals and released an official trailer last October. Updates on the film's progress appear to have been few and far between since then, with this new information suggesting that the gory nature of the film may be too extreme for it to enjoy a traditional theatrical release.

Notably, the original film was violent and gory but had a cult following, indicating that this would be the expectation for a reboot. Rotten Tomatoes has 24 reviews with a “Tomatometer” score of 92%, with the Critic’s Consensus stating, “Like the original, The Toxic Avenger isn't for everyone -- but viewers seeking an extremely gory, extremely silly good time won't be disappointed.”
