There's Already A Trailer For A Horror Movie Starring 'Steamboat Willie'
At the start of the year, Mickey Mouse in his Steamboat Willie incarnation entered the public domain, and creative types wasted no time in seizing the character. The iconic mouse is set to star in not just one but two horror movies and a co-op horror game Infestation 88. One of the horror films Mickey’s Mouse Trap already released a trailer showing a group of teens being hunted by a killer in a Mickey mask at a family fun center.
The other horror film is yet to be titled but has found its director Steven LaMorte. The film will focus on a mouse tormenting ferry passengers. LaMorte said, “Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror. It’s a project I’ve been dreaming of, and I can’t wait to unleash this twisted take on this beloved character to the world.”

Despite his excitement for the project LaMorte was quick to defend the original characters, “It all comes from our love of these characters. Filmmakers — we’re all kids in the sandbox. We love taking them and playing with them in different ways. It’s not a desire to ruin these characters or make a quick buck, but to love them and honor them and show them in a new light.” Filmmakers already set a precedent for converting classic characters into horror icons with Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. With Mickey’s first appearance now belonging to the public at no charge, anything is possible for the mouse.
