Despite its pivotal role in the founding of the industry, Nintendo, which comes off almost as an outsider in the video game industry, continues to have a commanding presence in games. Back when the newcomer to the console business Microsoft was duking it out with Sony for top dawg in terms of hardware, Nintendo, perhaps seeing the writing on the wall, decided to make a grand shift. Instead of focusing on delivering hardware to rival that of the Xbox and the Playstations, they were going to focus on producing great first-party games.

It’s largely worked. Despite a few hiccups, Nintendo games consistently rate incredibly high in reviews, and their third-party exclusives only add to the reputation. In time, it has paid off dividends for them. With the release of a recent report on sales, it was revealed that the Switch has risen to become the third best-selling console of all time.

Granted, “of all time” doesn’t encompass a long time, but video games have only been a mass market for nearly 40 years. Nevertheless, it’s still an impressive achievement for a company that doesn’t care to partake in the ever-present console wars. For all their focus on delivering experience over hardware, Nintendo enjoys a respect-demanding presence in the top five best-selling consoles. The PlayStation 2 remains untouched at the top with 155 million sales, followed closely by the Nintendo DS. As revealed, the Switch comes in third with 122 million sales, which surpasses the original GameBoy at 118 million, and the PlayStation 4 at 117 million.

It’s still entirely possible for the Switch to go even higher as the semiconductor shortage is sorted out, and there are still a few more years to go on the current console’s lifetime as the flagship. Nintendo is projected to have another 18 million sales of the Switch this year, which would place it squarely within striking distance of the top spot. It claims at least one top spot among the litany of Nintendo consoles, which is in “games sold.” Currently, the Switch is approaching nearly one billion games sold, more than any other Nintendo console.

History of Nintendo consoles

Time will tell if Nintendo’s continued focus on games and their heavy reliance on name recognition for their first-party and third-party heavy hitters like Mario and Pokémon will be a winning strategy, but so far, all signs say yes.
