In celebration of Spider-Man’s 60th anniversary, Marvel and New York Public Library (NYPL) are teaming up to release a special edition library card. As one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Universe, Spider-Man made his first comic book appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15. The card features images from the comic and will be available starting Tuesday, October 11th to both current and new NYPL patrons.

With the card, NYPL hopes to encourage a life-long love of reading (comics included!) and to showcase all that the library has to offer. In addition to Spider-Man, cards with images of Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy are also available. In addition, there will be posters and banners decorating NYPL’s Stephen A. Schwarzman building.

Marvel Vice President of License Publishing Sven Larsen commented on the collaboration:

"With so many of our most iconic moments and characters established in New York City, we’re thrilled to work with The New York Public Library to invite even more people to dive into Marvel and find their own favorites across Spider-Man’s legacy."

The special edition cards also coincide with the one-year anniversary of NYPL doing away with library fines as a way to remove barriers and provide more access to the library. This was a special plot point in Amazing Spider-Man #900 when Peter headed into the library only to discover that the library was no longer issuing fines. He promptly returned a stack of books that he had been keeping out of shame for being extremely overdue.

NYPL will also be at New York Comic Con hosting numerous professional development seminars on Thursday, October 6th where they plan on giving out a limited number of these exclusive cards. Panel topics include “Pop-Culture Fandom and Comics in the College Classroom,” and “Defending Manga.”
