Sony's 'El Muerto' Finds Its Director In Jonás Cuarón
Jonás Cuarón will direct El Muerto, according to Sony Pictures. The movie will star Benito A Martínez Ocasio, the Grammy Award-winning artist Bad Bunny. The script is in the early stages of development and was written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who penned the Blue Beetle script. Cuarón wrote the 2013’s space thriller Gravity with his father Alfonso Cuarón.
El Muerto is the alias of luchador Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez who appeared in the Marvel Comics Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man series. Sanchez is in line to receive the supernatural powers of “El Muerto” which come from a special mask. Sanchez is approached by J. Jonah Jameson, who is orchestrating a charity wrestling match. Jameson pairs Sanchez against Spiderman hoping he will unmask him. In the comics, Spider-man and Sanchez come together to defeat a villain from Sanchez’s past. This film is Marvel Studios' first outing with a Latino character in the lead role. El Muerto will be a part of the series of Sony films in connection to the “Spider-Man” universe, such as Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor Johnson, and Madame Web which stars Dakota Johnson with Sydney Sweeney.
Kraven the Hunter arrives in theatres on October 6, 2022. Madame Web releases on February 16, 2024. El Muerto will release to theatres on January 12th, 2024.
