Preliminary research suggests that the highly anticipated film The Marvels is on track to bring in anywhere from $75-80 million in its domestic debut at the box office. This projection is considerably lower than the $153.4 million that Captain Marvel earned for its cinematic opening in 2019. NRG speculates the opening will be from the low $70 million to the upper $80s, while The Quorum believes the $80-$90 million range is a more appropriate estimation. Factors outside of creative control may be at play for the lower estimated debut earnings. For example, the ongoing strikes prohibit talent from publicly promoting the film. Secondly, there is a concern about superhero fatigue at the box office.

That’s enough about the negatives; let’s talk about the positives. This film is the epitome of girl power on the silver screen. All three of the leads are female, with Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, whom fans were introduced to last year in the popular Disney+ series of the same name, and the character Monica Rambeau all grown up played by Teyonah Parris whom, MCU fans met in another Disney+ series, WandaVision. Additionally, The Marvels was directed by Nia DaCosta. DaCosta is the first black woman and the youngest director to direct an MCU film.

The film’s plot was teased in last year’s season finale of Ms. Marvel, where viewers witnessed Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel switch locations upon one of them using their powers. This offers a comical dilemma, with the three heroes unable to use their gifts or stay in their desired place. The Marvels are expected to land in theaters on November 10, 2023.
