Despite last summer’s industry preview, there’s still a lot that general audiences don’t know about the prequel The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. When The Lord of the Rings spinoff was first announced in 2021, writers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews were attached to the project, though that has since changed. Now the anime-style film has been turned over to writers Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. The War of the Rohirrim will be the first movie released in ten years for the franchise, taking place around 200 years before The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

The animated story will focus on the family ties of the kingdom of Rohan with its legendary King, Helm Hammerhand, voiced by Brian Cox, and his daughter Héra, voiced by Gaia Wise, as the leading protagonists. In The War of the Rohirrim, Helm will be fighting against Dunlending forces led by Wulf, throughout this origin story for the fortress Helm’s Deep, his future namesake. Miranda Otto will reprise her role from the original trilogy as Éowyn, this time narrating the historic tale as an omniscient narrator, similar to how Galadriel narrated The Fellowship of the Ring. Additionally, Luke Pasqualino, Laurence Ubong, and Shaun Dooley have starring roles in the film.

Kenji Kamiyama, known for Blade Runner: Black Lotus, is set to direct The War of the Rohirrim. Philippa Boyens will executive produce the project with studios New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Animation, and Sola Entertainment connected to the project. Boyens has billed the new writing team as the “next generation of writers.” Gittins and Papageorgiou have known each other since childhood and were selected to write for the production partly due to being closer to the age of the female protagonist, Héra. The pair are very excited to focus on the father-daughter bond between Helm and his only living child, Héra. They’ve mentioned how rewarding it’s been to work on the production alongside the returning audio team and composers Mike Hedges and Steven Gallagher, returning from Peter Jackson’s original trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy respectively.
