The Lord Of The Rings musical started back in 2006 in Toronto, Canada. It then moved to London, UK from 2007-2008. It was revived in London again in 2023 and is now making its way across the globe. The US premiere of the musical took place at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in Chicago, IL. The show will head to New Zealand later this year, but that won’t be its be its last stop; those fans in Australia will have the chance to experience the musical.

The musical was created under license from Middle-earth Enterprises, which is the owner of exclusive worldwide motion picture and stage rights for the Lord Of The Rings franchise. Producers confirmed that Australia was able to secure the production after its highly anticipated US debut in Chicago.

The stage play will make its debut on January 7th, 2025 at the State Theater Sydney in Australia. The Australian production arrives on the 70th anniversary of the publication of The Fellowship Of The Ring (the book was originally published in 1954). Auditions have already begun for iconic roles such as Bilbo, Frodo, Samwise, Gollum, Aragorn, Arwen, and Gandalf.

Australian co-producer of GWB Entertainment Torben Brookman said “This is a Lord Of The Rings production that will delight fans of all ages, whether you are 8 or 80, there is something for everyone in this brilliant telling of J.R.R Tolkien’s classic tale. It is the perfect show for summer in Sydney, and we could not be more delighted to bring the production to Australia.”
