Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid has a release that lines up with Memorial Day weekend, making its opening run something to watch in particular. As reported by Deadline, the box office predictions are putting the film at no less than $110 million in revenue. Should their metrics be accurate, the opening weekend revenue would be just under the entire domestic revenue for the animated film at about $111.5 million.

Revenue of $110 million would put the film in the top ranks of highest revenue for Memorial Day weekend releases. Their highest opening revenue goes to Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007), which hit $153 million. The live-action adaptation of Aladdin (2019) brought in $116.8 million on its opening.

Comparisons such as these should be taken with a grain of salt, as The Little Mermaid is being released in a post-pandemic theater environment. Attendance rates have been slowly climbing, especially following titles with large fandoms like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and John Wick: Chapter 4, however, the struggle is still there. While the story is different, Cruella (2021) was released around Memorial Day, making $26.5 million domestically and $42.6 million globally; the film was also released for purchase on Disney+ at the same time, which influenced the low numbers. The Little Mermaid is doing things differently, and being a larger title will make a difference in its outcome.T

he live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid hits theaters exclusively on May 26, 2023.  The film, starring experienced actress and singer Halle Bailey, sees a retelling of the classic Disney version of the story.  Ariel, already fascinated with the humans, falls in love with one and yearns to join them on land more than ever despite interaction being forbidden.  Going against her father’s wishes, she trades her singing voice for legs in a deal with a sea witch (Melissa McCarthy).  A Disney+ release date hasn’t been announced yet.
