'The Flintstones' Is Coming Back But This Time As An Animated Adult Comedy

A new Flintstones reboot, Bedrock, currently categorized as “in development” for the past two years, is gaining mass attention and eager viewers as its crew works to provide its pilot episode to Fox Entertainment and Warner Bros. In the past, Fox already ruled out production of an earlier adult comedy reboot proposed by Family Guy star and producer Seth MacFarlane in 2012. Now, this edition is led by wife and husband duo Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman from Brownstone Productions, who are known most recently for an R-Rated hit comedy film Cocaine Bear, Charlie’s Angels (2019), and the Pitch Perfect franchise.
A description can be found on Fox’s Bedrock page: “BEDROCK, a primetime animated adult comedy series continuing the story of everyone’s favorite modern Stone Age family, the Flintstones. BEDROCK catches up with the Flintstone family two decades after the original, with Fred on the brink of retirement and 20-something Pebbles embarking on her own career. As the Stone Age gives way to a shiny and enlightened new Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock will find this evolution harder than a swing from Bamm-Bamm’s club.”

Earlier, The Hollywood Reporter announced that director Elizabeth Banks will also be the lead voice actress (Pebbles Flintstone), and Lindsay Kerns, a popular kids’ cartoon show writer with work in Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous and Trolls: The Beat Goes On! will write out the series’ pilot episode. The cast has recently been released via Deadline: Amy Sedaris (Peli Motto from The Mandalorian) and Stephen Root (Fuches from Barry) as Wilma and Fred Flintstone, Nicole Byer (Bake-off show hostess for Nailed It!) and Joe Lo Truglio (Charles of Brooklyn Nine-Nine as well as a variety of Adult Swim series) as Betty and Barney Rubble, and lastly, Manny Jacinto (Mendoza from The Good Place and Lieutenant “Fritz” in Top Gun: Maverick) as Bamm-Bamm Rubble.
In previous renditions of the Flintstones, Fred was always the loud, chaotic schemer, a set of traits that were easily passed down to a sassy Pebbles. So those who can’t wait to meet the Flintstones again will be happy to know that Fox prepared for this waiting period by gaining the rights to the original (1960-1966) six-season series and will be hosting it for free with advertisements on their streaming platform Tubi starting Saturday, May 1st.
