With the advance of technology, many entertainment companies are turning to deep fakes for a variety of effects. Although this technology can be used to show actors sponsoring particular products or points of view, some deep fakes are less malicious than others. For example, Carrie Fisher was able to be a part of the Star Wars saga after her death with this technology, and Zelda fans were able to show Tom Holland as Link in their dream cast. However, one actor refuses to accept technology.

Taking a cue from his character Neo in The Matrix, Keanu Reeves warns against the dangers of deep fakes. The actor recalled a movie from the 90s or early 2000s where some had added a tear to his face. Reeves commented that if his performance could be altered digitally, there was no reason for him to show up and do the work. The performer continued, “What’s frustrating is you lose your agency. When you give a performance in a film, you know you’re going to be edited, but you’re participating in that. If you go into deep fake land, it has none of your points of view. That’s scary.” As extra protection from this evolving technology, Reeves confirmed that every film contract he signs has a clause to prevent digital manipulation.

Although Reeves’ contracts ensure he is protected, he shared his concern that these new technologies will have on the culture and society. The actor shared an encounter with a 15-year-old where Reeves explained how his character in The Matrix fought for what’s real. The teenager replied, “Who cares if it’s real?”

The reaction raised the alarm for Reeves, who worries about a generation already saturated with AI, NFTs, and deep fake technology. The John Wick star concluded, “It’s this sensorium. It’s spectacle. And it’s a system of control and manipulation. We’re on our knees looking at cave walls and seeing the projections, and we’re not having the chance to look behind us.” The controversy is sure to increase as people experiment with the technology. In the meantime, you can see real flesh and blood actors in Keanu Reeves’ latest movie John Wick: Chapter 4, coming to theaters on March 24, 2023.
