D23, Disney’s fan-focused event where announcements and sneak peeks are displayed, is in full swing. An exciting piece of news was dropped during the fanfare: the official trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has been released! The nearly two-minute-long look at the series introduces the main cast of kids and establishes the kind of world they are coming from.

The trailer opens with a facedown look at Wim, who is staring at a ceiling full of toy ships. The suburbs exist on this Star Wars planet, as the next shot shows a bus full of children on their way to school.  Pressure is mounted, as an important test for the children is coming up, something that feels mundane to the children.  In their quest to find excitement, they discover an abandoned ship which one initially believes to be “a lost Jedi temple.”  The ship isn’t as defunct as it looks, powering on and launching the children to an extremely unfamiliar place. This adventure gets them lost and eventually captured, where they meet a man who can use the Force. An interesting detail lies with a video game being played; it shows a Jedi fighting a rancor-like creature, potentially referencing Luke Skywalker’s fight at Jabba’s Palace and subtly showing how the rest of the universe perceives him and Jedi as a whole.

Some interesting set pieces were spotted at the physical location for D23 in Anaheim, California. A rather edgy-looking pirate crew is set up at a booth. It looks like the pirate king Shard’s associate Vane is coming back in this series. The character first appeared in The Mandalorian, which is set in the same era as Skeleton Crew.  Lore is being further developed for pre-established characters, potentially leading to further context for them in other appearances.

Skeleton Crew hits Disney+ on December 3, 2024, with a two-episode premiere; there will be eight episodes in total. Set in the New Republic era, this coming-of-age story follows a group of kids as they get lost in the wider galaxy and must find their way home. If you’re looking forward to another D23 event, the next one is scheduled for November 8-10, 2024, in São Paulo, Brazil.
