The long-in-development third installment to the Tron film series, Tron: Ares, revealed footage of the project Friday, August 9th, at the D23 Expo. Main actors Jeff Bridges, Evan Peters, Greta Lee, and Jared Leto were all on stage to introduce the first look, though many other notable actors have also been cast in the film.

As the reveal begins, we see Evan Peters’ Julian Dillinger (a character who suspiciously shares a surname with the original Tron’s human villain, Edward Dillinger) heading a keynote presentation. In a short speech, Dillinger proclaims that humans are not approaching AI and other great technological advancements, but these elements are instead approaching us.

The footage changes to a focus on Ares, played by Jared Leto, touching rain in the real world. Ares is described as a Program uniquely tasked to enter the physical world. Greta Lee’s character Eve Kim is a human programmer who creates the path that allows Ares to enter the real world.

The remainder of the footage includes a car being cut in half by a Light Cycle, Tron’s most iconic vehicle, and Jeff Bridges in white robes offering a greeting to Programs, Tron’s term for the residents that make up the Grid, its digital world. Jeff Bridges' return may surprise some, as Kevin Flynn, Bridges’ role from past Tron installments, and the character’s evil doppelganger program Clu were killed in Tron: Legacy’s finale. His appearance suggests a part of him has lived on.

At the end of the footage, a final reveal was that the score for Tron: Ares will be composed by Nine Inch Nails, a notable rock and electronica band. Band founder Trent Reznor and frequent collaborator Atticus Ross came on stage after this announcement.

Tron: Ares is currently set for an October 2025 release date, but has been in the works for years, with Jared Leto signing on in 2017 to star in the film.
