The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will premiere in theaters on December 13, prompting Warner Bros. Pictures to release an extended look online. The eight-minute opening scene was originally seen at New York Comic Con back in October. Some see the online announcement as a strategic response to Sony Pictures posting the first eight minutes of Kraven the Hunter earlier this week; the two films share a joint opening day.

The Lord of the Rings animated prequel takes viewers back to Middle-earth, only 183 years before the events in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, which is in turn 60 years before the events in The Fellowship of the Ring. As seen in The Two Towers, the Battle at Helm’s Deep focuses on Uruk-hai clashing against the Rohirrim, though other parties join the fight later. Helm’s Deep fortress was named after the legendary Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox), one of the greatest kings in Rohan’s history.

As the official synopsis explains, The War of the Rohirrim focuses on Helm’s daughter, Hèra (Gaia Wise), who “must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.” Miranda Otto returns from the original trilogy to narrate as Éowyn. Kenji Kamiyama directed the animated movie, and Philippa Boyens produced it alongside Jason DeMarco and Joseph Chu.

Overall, it seems that The War of the Rohirrim will outshine its MCU opposition, Kraven the Hunter, at the box office. The tale of Middle-earth’s fantastic history will be mesmerizing on the big screen for both longtime fans and those new to the franchise. With its rich storytelling potential and vibrant animation, the film will hopefully make a meaningful impact at the box office over the holiday season. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim releases internationally on December 11 and in the United States on December 13.
