James Gunn Feels Like Henry Cavill Was Led On By Previous Leaders At DC
It’s a sad day for the DCU fans, especially the fans of Cavill’s performance as Superman. James Gunn, filmmaker and co-chair CEO of DC Studios, has recently announced that Cavill will not be resuming his role of the caped hero. While the actor was not fired from the role, Cavill was not contracted to future appearances. While many fans supported Cavill as Superman, his tenure in the role was marked by a lot of uncertainty. As a result, that same uncertainty extended to Cavill himself.
Considering how contracts are vital in the film industry, they have caused major issues because actors and studios are contractually secured in their roles. In Cavill's case, the exact opposite appears to be the case. According to Gunn himself, complications around “the casting of actors as X-Men, the creating of a solo Hulk Project, and the ability to use and integrate Spider-Man” have faced hurdles due to preexisting contracts with Fox, Universal, and Sony.

As James Gunn further detailed on his Twitter page, “one of our jobs is to is to come in and make sure the DCU is connected in film, TV, gaming, and animation.”
While it would have been ideal to keep the same actor to build a cohesive story, or “anything labeled DC elsewhere”, Gunn is quick to state how the newest Superman installment, Superman: Legacy, marks "the true beginning of the DCU." With a desire to match the vision of the writers and directors, Gunn understands the importance of storytelling. As a result, Gunn shared on Twitter that Cavill wouldn't be a good fit for the latest iteration of Superman as the film focuses "on an earlier part of Superman's life."
As the newest Superman will return “to a less jaded and more hopeful Superman than the one that existed in the DCEU”, a “fresh face” is needed. Luckily, Cavill holds no ill will toward Gunn as “Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists…. onwards and upwards.” Words Superman fans, and others, can live by.
