These Are The Winners Of The 2023 Golden Globes
On Tuesday night, the 80th Golden Globes were held. As per usual for this ceremony it was at the Beverly Hilton, televised on NBC, returning there after a year where it wasn’t broadcast as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was too racist. It was hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael. Eddie Murphy received the Cecil B. DeMille Award and Ryan Murphy received the Carol Burnett Award. It can certainly be said that the competitive awards had a lot of interesting winners. Let’s get into that.
It looks like House of the Dragon has put the now-franchise back in the Hollywood Foreign Press’s favor, as the show wins one of the biggest awards on the television side: Best Drama Series. Season eight of Game of Thrones had no such nomination (one may recall that it won the equivalent Emmy). Emma D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra Targaryen, lost Best Actress in a Television Drama to Zendaya and her portrayal of Rue Bennett on Euphoria.

However, Angela Bassett became the first performer from a Marvel movie to win a Golden Globe for that Marvel movie role, winning Best Supporting Actress as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In her speech, she pays tribute to Chadwick Boseman and thanks fans for the love and embrace of the characters. Rihanna’s song for the film, “Lift Me Up” lost Best Original Song to “Naatu Naatu” from RRR. Wakanda Forever will make its physical and streaming home media releases next month.
Everything Everywhere All At Once stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy and Best Supporting Actor respectively. Yeoh had arguably one of the best speeches of the night, and as she was being played off, she told them “Shut up, please. I can beat you up, and that’s serious!”. She’s right, especially to those who know her from films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Quan, having already reunited with Harrison Ford at D23 Expo, reunited with his Temple of Doom director Steven Spielberg, who won Best Director and Best Drama Film with The Fabelmans. He defeated James Cameron in both categories, nominated for Avatar: The Way of Water. Wednesday and star Jenna Ortega lost Best Musical or Comedy Series and Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series to Abbott Elementary and its star Quinta Brunson. Tyler James Williams won Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series for his role in the same series.
The night’s biggest winner was The Banshees of Inisherin, winning three of its eight nominations. This included Best Musical or Comedy film, Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Colin Farrell, and Best Screenplay, with Martin McDonagh. Austin Butler won Best Actor in a Drama for Elvis as Elvis Presley and Cate Blanchett won Best Actress in a Drama for Tár as Lydia Tár. Justin Hurwitz won Best Original Score for Babylon, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio won Best Animated Feature, and Best Non-English Language Film went to Argentina’s submission Argentina, 1985.
Back on the TV side, The White Lotus won Best Limited Series, with star Jennifer Coolidge winning Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series. Paul Walter Hauser won Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series, and Julia Garner of Ozark won the Supporting Actress category in a Drama Series. The Best Actor and Actress in a Limited Series were Evan Peters for Monster and Amanda Seyfried for Hulu’s The Dropout. Kevin Costner won Best Actor in a Drama Series for Yellowstone, while Jeremy Alan White won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series for Hulu and FX’s The Bear.
And those are all the winners! Up next are the Critics Choice Awards on January 15, the Academy Awards nominations on January 24, the Annie Awards on February 25, the Screen Actors Guild Awards the next day and the Academy Awards ceremony on March 12. Remember, animation is cinema.
