The Director Of 'Godzilla Minus One' Could Land A VFX Oscar Nomination

Takashi Yamazaki, director of Godzilla Minus One, could be up for a VFX Oscar nomination. If he wins, he’ll be the first director to be recognized in the visual effects category in 56 years. The last director to earn this recognition was Stanley Kubrick for his film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Per tradition, the visual effects branch held a bakeoff, serving as the category's pre-nomination event. The 10 shortlisted films were featured for attendees. Along with Godzilla Minus One, other honorable mentions include Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

It is interesting to note that animated feature films such as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse are rare in this category, as the lines between visual effects and animation are often blurred. Another noteworthy comparison is the project's budget and number of hands-on deck crew members. For instance, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had a considerably larger budget and crew than Japan’s Toho, Godzilla Minus One. At the bakeoff event, the Godzilla team presented their work.
They completed the film with 610 VFX shots, a team of 35 artists, and a modest $15 million budget. This working situation opened the door for the film’s director, Yamazaki, and compositor, Tatsuji Nojima, to play a more significant role in the films visual effects.
