The Duffer Brothers, Matt and Ross, have big plans to take Stranger Things from the screen to the stage. Netflix’s popular streaming series gained a cult following from the first season onward. Now, fans have an opportunity to return to Hawkins, Indiana in the new stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

The play takes place in Hawkins in 1959, just a few decades before the main action of the series. The play, written by the Duffer Brothers, Kate Trefry, and Jack Thorne will see returning characters such as Jim Hopper, Joyce, Bob, and a few original characters as well. The Duffer brothers called the play “a journey into the past that sets the groundwork for the future of Stranger Things.”

The play’s synopsis reveals a little more about the show. The synopsis reads, “Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past have a very long reach…Brought to life by a multi-award-winning creative team, who take theatrical storytelling and stagecraft to a whole new dimension, this gripping new adventure will take you right back to the beginning of the ‘Stranger Things’ story – and may hold the key to the end.”

Back in July, the Duffer brothers announced a new company called Upside Down Pictures to dive deeper into the world of Stranger Things. Among the projects is a spin-off of the series, an original series, and the play Stranger Things: The First Shadow. The play opens in autumn in London’s West End with ticket sales starting this spring.
