A new trailer, entitled Ambition, has been released for the 16th installment of the Final Fantasy franchise. First announced during the 2020 PlayStation 5 Showcase Event, Sony and Square Enix’s trailer for Final Fantasy XVI has given fans a closer look at the game’s lore, as well as a peek at the gameplay.

A fleshed-out visual concept was given in conjunction with the lore dump. This rendition of the title takes place in the land of Valisthea. This realm is home to magic structures called the Mothercrystals, which have kingdoms built around each mountainous structure. A powerful, dark threat known as the Blight puts the Mothercrystals and the five surrounding kingdoms at risk of death. These kingdoms include the Grand Duchy of Rosaria, the Holy Empire of Sanbreque, the Kingdom of Waloed, the Dhalmekian Republic, and the Iron Kingdom.

A clear look at some of the Dominants was shown in the trailer. They seem to be related concept-wise to a Final Fantasy staple, Summoners. Joshua Rosefield of Rosaria is shown as the Dominant of the Phoenix, summoning the power as he is attacked and under emotional stress. His brother Clive, the playable character, is tasked to defend him and can also use some fiery abilities.

Final Fantasy XVI has a visual theme of medieval Europe with the promise of intense action. The game is currently looking at a Summer of 2023 release date. After that, it will be available exclusively on PlayStation 5, with a PC version unknown at this time.
