Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is still going strong following the massive success of the Spider-Verse installments and the mixed-review live-action films. Their next installment to the SSU, Kraven the Hunter, will be a live-action adaptation of the Spider-Man villain’s origins. This will be the first time Sergei Kravinoff will be featured in a live-action format. The first trailer for the film has been recently released, introducing the audience to the bare bones of the plot. Check it out below! Be warned: the film is definitely earning its R-rated status for violence.

This trailer presents the bare bones of Kraven’s origin story, why and how he becomes a hunter to such a degree. A drop of blood from the lion that tried to kill him as a child gets into Sergei’s system, aiding his mutation along. From there, further conflict and confrontation between father and son are introduced, as well as other conflicts Kraven must conquer to become the greatest hunter in the world. The final clip of the trailer teases an interesting look at another iconic Spider-Man villain, The Rhino. A possible, solid tie-in to the Sinister Six, which Kraven helped establish in the comics, could crop up in future teasers.

In a move you “didn’t see coming” until it’s right in your face, Aaron Taylor-Johnson is the titular anti-hero for a Marvel movie. He previously played the MCU’s version of the hero Quicksilver during Avengers: Age of Ultron. Taylor-Johnson isn’t the only MCU alumni in this trailer; Russell Crowe, who plays Sergei’s father, Nikolai, played Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Kraven the Hunter will hit theaters exclusively on October 6, 2023. This isn’t the only upcoming installment to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe; El Muerto is scheduled for a January 12, 2024 release, Madame Web is set for a February 16, 2024 release, and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled for a March 29, 2024 release. This is assuming no delays crop up.
