Should Sony Just Give Up On Spider-Man?

Everyone’s favorite friendly neighborhood superhero could be in danger, and this time is not because some psychotic villains want him dead. This time Spider-Man is facing the consequences of bad choices from those in charge of the projects. Sony has something big at its disposal, an entire universe of characters and stories, but they need to think carefully about their next move.

Sony has attempted to create its own Spider-Man universe a few times now. However, their plans came to a halt for a couple of different reasons. Ultimately they restarted the journey. Now, with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man establishing the existence of the Spider-verse in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sony has a great opportunity of creating something new.

In previous attempts to create a Spider-Man franchise, Sony committed a few mistakes. Instead of trying to learn from both their mistakes and the success of others Sony still presents a weak proposal for the future of the franchise. Take Morbius for instance, the movie was not great (to be clear it was not the worst thing in the world either), but it presented an entertaining story; the problem relies on how it was attempted to link it to Spider-Man. It all came down to a scene in which the Vulture (Michael Keaton) meets with Morbius. The Vulture appeared in Morbius’ universe and instantly assumed it has something to do with Spider-Man, from Dr. Morbius's reaction we can tell he knows Spider-Man, we just don’t know which one.

This interaction, while vague, opens an opportunity for Sony to introduce its own Spider-Man. Director Daniel Espinoza confirmed that Spider-Man does exist in this universe Morbius and Venom share, however, there is no clue as to which Spider-Man he refers or even if it is a Spider-Man we already know.

If Sony plans on creating their own Spider-Man universe they need to approach this introduction carefully, since they cannot afford to start fresh with a new Spider-Man and create movies to explain his origin. If they introduce a new Spider-Man the story should revolve around the current problems and how this new Peter Parker addresses them one at a time; as we know combining many storylines into a single movie is what caused the reboot of previous Spider-Man franchises.

Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man had some of the best superhero movies ever created. Unfortunately, creative differences between Sam Raimi and Sony caused Spider-Man 3 to have too many things going on at once and caused some discontent among fans. Andrew Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man suffered the same fate. In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, there is a lot to follow: Peter's relationship with Gwen, Harry's descent into madness, and Electro's story. Both of these movies gained respect and appreciation from the community as the years went by, yet that does not erase the mistakes that were made. Sony must learn from their experience and try to take the situation a bit calmer and with more patience when it comes to developing characters and stories.

With new projects seeing the light Sony has a decent chance to get their plans for Spider-Man back on track and regain the trust and enthusiasm of the fans. Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter, and Spider-Woman are the confirmed Spider-related projects from Sony. Each one of these presents a different approach to the Spider-verse, it is up to Sony to take their time to craft stories that not only work individually but complement each other instead of interfering with the storylines.

So, should Sony give up on Spider-Man? Not necessarily. With these new projects developing a few steps away from Peter Parker there is a chance Sony creates something we can fall in love with again. Watching the Spider-verse expand is something every fan wishes to see and we know Sony is capable of doing it. After all, they created Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse which many people consider a masterpiece. Sony has all the good cards to create something valuable and meaningful, only time will tell what the fate of Spider-Man will be.
