Shout! Studios Acquires Exclusive Rights For 'The Dark Crystal' And Other Jim Henson Studios Projects

As of January 1st of this year, Shout! Studios entered a multi-year distribution alliance with Jim Henson Studio’s classic fantasy-adventure films, The Dark Crystal (1982) and Labyrinth (1986). The multi-year agreement gives Shout! Studios rights to titles in the areas of streaming, video-on-demand, digital download, and all packaged media, as well as limited non-theatrical releases and behind-the-scenes specials about both films. Under the new agreement, Shout! Studios is planning an extensive rollout of the films and associated content, beginning with new digital releases of both films across all major digital media platforms starting on February 6. Shout! Studios and Jim Henson Studios also previously agreed to a worldwide distribution deal a year and a half ago for thirteen other Jim Henson Studios award-winning series and specials such as Farscape and The Storyteller.

“Jim Henson was a prolific and deeply creative artist, innovating both filmmaking and puppetry with these iconic fantasy films that have come to define the genre over the decades since their release,” said Kerry Novick, who serves as Vice President of Global Distribution at The Jim Henson Company. “With our new partner Shout! Studios, fans will easily be able to enjoy The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth and their respective making-of specials, and new audiences around the world will be introduced to these seminal titles that are such an important part of Jim Henson’s legacy.”

Shout! Studios currently hold rights to a large collection of classic and contemporary films, animation series, documentaries, and properties. Some of its most popular properties include the popular series, ALF, The Johnny Carson Show, The Carol Burnett Show, Roger Corman’s New Horizons Pictures, ITV, and GKIDS. Jim Henson Studios remains, as ever, an innovator in puppetry, animatronics, and digital animation. Recent studio credits include 2019’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a prequel series to the film for Netflix, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio for Netflix, and Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock for Apple TV+, a reboot of the classic 1980s HBO series Fraggle Rock.
